Year 10 (14-15 years) / IGCSE

In Year 10, our students have the opportunity to take the IGCSE (French General Examination Certificate) and the Diplôme National du Brevet (National Brevet Diploma). Students validate their knowledge and skills through official, recognised, and rewarding certificates. The Year 10 curriculum is intended to be relevant, engaging, and well-balanced between the two programmes: French and English. Students will be encouraged to make choices, target their interests, and develop their skills, while also demonstrating autonomy, involvement, and initiative. Our goal is to best support each student so that they become motivated and enthusiastic learners.

Students who have acquired a sufficient level of English (minimum level B1) can take the IGCSE.

Created by Cambridge International Examinations, The International General Certificate of Secondary Education is a programme with an international calling which is prepared over two years (Year 10 and Year 11) by students aged 14-16 regardless of their native language.

With examination and/or training centres in over 100 countries worldwide and a choice of over 70 subjects, the IGCSE is an internationally recognised and respected qualification.

At Open World, students take an average of 5 IGCSEs in Year 10 from the following subjects: English Language, Higher Maths, Single or Double Award Science, Geography, Spanish/German, Chinese.

IGCSE exams, depending on the subject, contain a range of tests: practical work, continuous assessments, oral exams, as well as written tests.

Preparing for both the brevet des collèges (French State exam) and the IGCSE offers students the dual advantage of continuing their immersion in a unique bilingual environment, benefiting from exceptional educational support, and broadening their choice of schooling options.

From Year 9 onwards, the emphasis is placed on the acquisition of working methods and examination techniques (mock exams, revision assistance), on frequent assessments and on monitoring personal work.

During this two-year cycle, the focus is on the acquisition of work methods and exam technique (mock papers, strategies for independent study), on frequent evaluations, and on monitoring individual work.

The IGCSEs present both the unquestionable proof of a bilingual education and an excellent level of language acquisition as well as the occasion to follow classes in an Anglo-Saxon context using its unique approach and methods.

IGCSEs are graded from 9 (high) to 1 (low). A 4 is considered proof of the obtention of a satisfactory level in a subject and indicates that a student is ready to meet the requirements of the International Baccalauréat curriculum.
