Years 9 & 10 · IGCSE — Ages 13–15
Two degrees, a gateway to the world
Years 9 and 10 are important and more demanding: students demonstrate their knowledge and skills through the IGCSE exams and the Diplôme National du Brevet. The curriculum fully engages students in the dual French and British curriculum.
The dual degree program
Three certifications, one path
The British International Diploma
International General Certificate of Secondary Education
The IGCSE® is an internationally recognised qualification —the equivalent, for an international audience, of the British GCSE taken by students in the United Kingdom in Year 11 (the equivalent of 10th grade). English is the language of instruction, and the term IGCSE refers to both the curriculum and the final qualification.
It ensures that students can continue their education at international, British, or English-speaking schools around the world. Students who have achieved a sufficient level of English proficiency (B1 level) prepare for the IGCSE exams and take them at Open World at the end of Year 10.
Courses Offered at Open World
The IGCSE curriculum includes more than 70 subjects worldwide; Open World offers a selection of these. Each student takes the IGCSE exams of their choice from among these—an average of 5 exams, up to 8, at the end of Year 10:
French
Mathematics
Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
Spanish
German
Global Citizenship
Chinese
A variety of test formats
The French diploma
The National Brevet Diploma
In addition to the IGCSE exams, students demonstrate their knowledge and skills at the end of middle school through the Diplôme National du Brevet. Preparing for both the Brevet des Collèges and the IGCSE exams offers students a twofold advantage:
This dual-track diploma programme, which is completed at the end of Year 10, is a rare and valuable combination that opens doors to high schools in France and abroad.
Certifications
Cambridge English
We also prepare students for Cambridge English certifications, which are international qualifications that certify their level of English. These exams are valid for life and are highly regarded by many international institutions. Middle school students are prepared for and take the following exams:

Taking A-Levels at Open World
Open World does not prepare students for A-Levels —the next stage after IGCSE in the British curriculum. Students who wish to continue on the international track do so after leaving the school by preparing for these exams through distance learning at another institution. They still have the option of coming to take their A-Level exams here as independent candidates at our approved examination centre.
Official recognition
Open World is an accredited Edexcel Pearson centre
A mark of quality: our students prepare for and take their IGCSE and Cambridge English exams here at school —which also offers A-Level exams for independent candidates.
